The legacy of our local is long and glorious. Local 12943 has been representing the employees at the Kingsport facility for over 65 years. Local 12943 was officially chartered by the United Mine Workers of America, District 50, on December 6, 1944 with Hascue Gilliam presiding as local union president. On April 24, 1971, the UMWA, District 50 merged with the United Steelworkers of America and on August 9, 1972, Local 12943 was officially chartered by the United Steelworkers of America. Local 12943 has represented employees from Mead Paper, Willamette Industries, Weyerhaeuser and Domtar.
